The Phoenix Human Relations Commission in partnership with the City of Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department, the AZ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, and Arizona OIC, are calling for nominations to honor Phoenix area citizens, youth included, who have made notable contributions to fostering a compassionate and fair community.

In an effort to celebrate cultural diversity, awareness, and unity, the commission continues its tradition of recognizing individuals and organizations that live up to the ideals of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. According to a city press release, the award ceremony spotlights those who have actively worked toward equality for all people.

Nominations are being accepted for several prestigious awards. The Calvin C. Goode Lifetime Achievement Award will go to an individual whose life mirrors the commitment to social and economic justice, civil rights protection, and improving lives in Phoenix, just as Goode himself did during his 22 years on the Phoenix City Council. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Living the Dream Award will recognize someone whose actions reflect Dr. King’s vision and personal commitment to human relations and social justice.

The AZMLK "Drum Major for the Community" award seeks to highlight an organization or business that has gone beyond its professional scope to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) for Phoenix residents. These efforts mark a step forward in upholding the values that Dr. King advocated, through practical and impactful deeds.

All honorees will be celebrated at the Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Awards Breakfast, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16, 2026. For those interested in placing nominations, an online form can be accessed at the City of Phoenix website.
