The Presidio's newest park expansion welcomes its first weekend visitors with celebrations, live music, and community activities as Outpost Meadow officially opened to the public following a $12 million transformation starting Saturday. The 1.5-acre picnic area, which replaces what was once a parking lot, extends the popular Presidio Tunnel Tops with space for up to 240 people to gather, dine, and enjoy sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Speaking to Hoodline San Francisco at the informational tent during Saturday's opening weekend festivities, Andrea Parker, Visitor Services Manager of the Presidio Trust, shared details about the site's transformation. "It opened last Thursday," Parker explained, referring to the July 17 public opening. "The Grand Opening was on Wednesday," she noted of the ribbon-cutting ceremony that preceded the public opening.

From Parking Lot to Park Paradise

The transformation represents the next phase in the greater and substantial environmental restoration, according to Parker. "The Meadow used to be a parking lot," she told Hoodline SF. Looking back further, she described the area's previous condition: "Decades ago, the whole area down here in the marshland was concrete with discarded tires and things."

Now the site features 23,000 native plants and 4,000 drought-tolerant ornamentals, creating coastal habitat for local wildlife while providing permeable surfaces that help absorb stormwater and reduce flooding during heavy rains.

Picnic Options and Food Service

Parker detailed the site's picnic arrangements during her conversation with Hoodline SF. "One of the picnic areas will always be first come, first serve. Two can be reserved," she explained, pointing to different sections of the meadow. The reservation system for some tables is expected to launch in fall 2025, according to Presidio Trust information.

"There are grills in this area that can be reserved," Parker noted, gesturing toward the barbecue facilities. Food truck enthusiasts will also find expanded options, as Parker confirmed: "We have spaces for up to three food trucks. They will be there on weekends only."

Weekend Celebrations Draw Moderate Crowd

The opening weekend featured a packed schedule of community celebrations that coincided with the third anniversary of Presidio Tunnel Tops. Saturday's festivities included performances by Mariachi Bonitas, an all-woman mariachi band that delighted visitors with roving performances throughout the afternoon.

Families gathered on the new lawn for activities including giant Jenga and cornhole. In Sunday's festivities, there will be an interactive drum circle led by Mr. Bongo from Duniya Dance and Drum Company providing entertainment. The weekend's programming also includes art giveaways, screen printing demonstrations, and DJ lessons.

Beer Festival Adds to Weekend Festivities

The opening weekend coincided the with the third annual Parks4All Brewfest, which brought 20 local breweries to the nearby Parade Ground. As SFist reported, the beer festival featured tastings from breweries including Laughing Monk Brewing, Anderson Valley Brewing Co., and Standard Deviant Brewing, along with live music and food trucks.

Community Games and Activities

Hoodline San Francisco documented families enjoying lawn games throughout the weekend, with giant Jenga proving particularly popular among visitors of all ages. The large central lawn provided ample space for cornhole tournaments and other recreational activities, while the information tent served as a hub for visitor services and park information.

Food Trucks and Expanded Dining Options

The weekend showcased the enhanced food service capabilities that Outpost Meadow brings to the Presidio. Los Kuyas food truck was among the vendors serving visitors during the opening festivities, while a new Saltwater popup tent appeared near the Tunnel Tops playground area, expanding dining options for families visiting the popular play space.

Visitors were also observed grilling on the top areas of Tunnel Tops park, taking advantage of the expanded barbecue facilities much like the ones that complement the new picnic arrangements. The integration of food service with the existing Sports Basement location creates a comprehensive recreational destination.

Design and Accessibility Features

Outpost Meadow was designed by Field Operations, the landscape architects behind New York City's acclaimed High Line. The site features wheelchair-accessible picnic tables with companion seating, accessible parking spaces, and pathways that accommodate strollers and wheelchairs.

The $12 million project was funded through the California Natural Resources Agency's "Outdoors for All" initiative, designed to expand outdoor recreation opportunities for all Californians regardless of zip code or income level.

Popular Destination Expands

Since Presidio Tunnel Tops opened in July 2022, the site has welcomed five million visits, making it one of San Francisco's most successful park destinations. According to San Francisco Chronicle reporting, visitors consistently requested more picnic tables and gathering spaces, leading to the Outpost Meadow expansion.

The expansion includes 19 picnic tables made of thick-cut Monterey Cypress and Douglas Fir, arranged in three large picnic areas around a central green space. Water fountains, expanded bicycle parking, and improved vehicle parking complement the recreational amenities.

Transportation and Access

The new meadow is accessible via Muni's 30 Stockton line, which has been extended to a new terminus behind Sports Basement, and the 43 Masonic line serving the nearby Presidio Transit Center. The free Presidio GO Shuttle also provides service to the area, while Bay Wheels bike share stations offer additional transportation options.

Outpost Meadow represents the latest addition to the Presidio's ongoing transformation, building on decades of environmental restoration that has converted approximately 180 acres of asphalt to permeable surfaces throughout the park. The project is part of Presidio Forward, the Presidio Trust's multi-year initiative to renew the park's infrastructure, landscapes, and historic buildings.
