The Port of San Diego is facilitating connections, both communal and physical, with its recent move to support the Bayshore Bikeway's expansion in National City. The Port's Board of Port Commissioners has passed a resolution to enter an MOU with National City, promising $2 million in matching grant funds to aid the construction of a crucial bikeway segment, as confirmed by a recent announcement from the Port of San Diego. This investment aims to link the nearly 24-mile bike path encompassing San Diego Bay and connecting the Port’s five member cities.

The collaboration between the Port, National City, and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) signifies a shared commitment to promote a healthier, more connected community. "We’re excited to support National City in the next step of this project, and we look forward to residents and visitors enjoying the completed bike path for years to come," said Chair Danielle Moore of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners, as reported by the Port of San Diego. Biking enthusiasts can expect to traverse this segment seamlessly soon, filling a gap in the established bike path and creating an uninterrupted waterfront experience.

Further financial details, highlighted by the Port, show SANDAG's award of $5.7 million to National City earlier in 2025 for the bikeway's construction, complemented by the Port’s $2 million grant match. The funds come in two parts: $600,000 derived from the Maritime Industrial Impact Fund (MIIF) for the portion of tidelands, and the remaining $1.4 million from the Port’s Grant Matching Reserves allocated to the tideland path section. The MIIF, originating in 2010 to mitigate maritime industrial impacts, sees its annual contribution already factored into the Port's fiscal year 2026 budget.
