Last Thursday evening, officers from the Portland Police Bureau's Central Precinct Bike Squad, which operates in the high-tension arteries of Old Town, halted two individuals in what unfolded as a substantial drug find. According to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau, the bike squad, conducting their routine surveillance, approached a parked vehicle with Mykell A. Bru, 37, and Luella T. Asuluk, 39, suspected of fentanyl use at approximately 6:06 p.m.
Eligible for deflection to the Multnomah County Pathways Center, the two were found in possession of the opioid and agreed to a deflection transport, offered as an alternative to traditional judicial proceedings. As the car was parked illegally, officers proceeded to search the vehicle before towing, uncovering a shipping box in the back seat with more than just legal personal-use substances. Seized were 14.1 pounds of marijuana, ammunition, and a replica firearm, peeking out from the container.
The marijuana quantity seized from Bru and Asuluk trumped Oregon's personal use laws by a wide margin, prompting felony charges for possession. The actual possession, classifying over 16 times the legal private use amount, led to a booking at the Multnomah County Detention Center. Both face charges of ORS 475.752 (3) (B) for the fentanyl and ORS 475C.337 (3) (C) (a) for unlawful possession of cannabis as reported by the Portland Police Bureau.
