Fort Lauderdale residents were faced with a sudden emergency when a powerline fell and ignited several vehicles yesterday. According to Local 10 News, the incident occurred off Southeast 15th Street, where witness Jennifer Dunworth reported hearing a "loud bang" before discovering the blaze outside her condo. "It was a loud bang," she said in a statement obtained by Local 10 News, describing the scene where a work van was torched along with several other vehicles.
The fire resulted from an energized line making contact with a parked vehicle, which also led to power outages in the immediate vicinity. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue had to wait for Florida Power & Light (FPL) crews to safely de-energize the grid to swiftly extinguish the fire, inadvertently affecting over 2,000 customers, as Caribbean National Weekly reported. FPL responded to the scene and worked on restoring power.
No injuries were reported from the event. However, as crews from FPL worked on addressing the power outages, the full extent of residents impacted by the outage remained unclear at the time of publication. The cause of the downed power line, which triggered such disruption, was not immediately clear and is likely to be under investigation.
Officials have emphasized the dangers that downed lines pose, urging the public to treat all downed lines as potentially lethal, "even if they are not sparking or making noise," stated department spokesman Frank Guzman, according to an interview with Caribbean National Weekly.
