The Deering Estate is gearing up to feature the work of artist Miquel Salom in an upcoming exhibit known as "Retorno". The exhibition will showcase a retrospective of Salom’s photography, highlighting the marriage of traditional processes with contemporary themes. Salom's works, produced using the wet plate collodion technique, will be displayed at the estate's Richmond Cottage from August 1 to October 31.
The "Contemporary Currents" series, as reported by Miami-Dade County news release, is an annual initiative that brings together contemporary art, historical collections, and the estate's storied architecture. Salom, a seasoned Artist-in-Residence from 2018, will have his intricate works featured in The Garden Room of the Richmond Cottage. His "ICTUM OLIM VI ... tempus fugit..." collection revolved around capturing both the natural surroundings and architectural structures within the estate during his residency.
According to the county's announcement, the exhibition will not only include an expanded study of Salom's earlier wet plate photographs but also various pieces of ephemera that document his creative process. Those interested can attend the opening reception and documentary screening on September 7, with free tickets available through Eventbrite.
Salom has built a distinguished international presence with his photography, having exhibited in places as varied as New York, Spain, and Hong Kong. The Deering Estate notes that Salom has been self-taught and refined a unique 23-step process in his craft, deeply influenced by the methods of photographer Sally Mann. His inventive process has garnered him a reputation as a visual storyteller across diverse landscapes.
The Deering Estate, situated at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami, plays a multifaceted role as a museum, cultural hub, and ecological field station. It’s recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. The site is one of seven "Heritage Parks" in Miami-Dade County that contribute to the region's rich historical and environmental tapestry, while also offering recreational and educational experiences, as stated on the county's website.
