Saint Louis County's quest to provide a refuge for its homeless animal population took a positive stride this week. The Animal Care and Control Adoption Center, which has been operating under the watchful eye of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, has successfully met the state's requirements for an animal shelter and has been awarded a license. Inspectors visited the shelter on Monday and deemed it fully compliant with the necessary animal care and operational standards, according to a statement released by the Saint Louis County government.
The journey to compliance was a collective effort, headed by Division Director Malik Johnson, who told Saint Louis County, "We are excited to have obtained our license with the state and are ready to move forward, continuing our mission to find loving homes for every animal in our care." The license represents more than just a regulatory victory; it symbolizes the dedication and countless hours poured into the facility by staff and volunteers alike – a commitment that extended beyond regular working hours and into their personal time.
Director of Public Health, Dr. Kanika Cunningham, also reflected on the efforts of the team. “This has truly been a team effort,” she told Saint Louis County. "Over the past few weeks, our entire staff and volunteers have devoted long hours, including additional weekend hours, to ensuring the facility meets state standards." Their mission was clear – to create a space for animals that not only meets the legal requirements but goes above and beyond to provide care and comfort to creatures in need.
While the inspection and subsequent licensing mark significant achievements, challenges remain. The shelter currently houses over 250 animals and is reaching out to the community for help, as there is a pressing need for foster and permanent homes. The over-crowding at the facility has prompted, urgent appeals to animal lovers in the region to consider adoption or fostering to alleviate the strain on resources and space.
The Saint Louis County Animal Care and Control Adoption Center continues to strive toward its noble goal, ensuring every animal thrives in a caring environment. For those interested in lending a hand, whether through adoption, fostering, or volunteering, now is a critical time to act and make a lasting difference in the lives of these animals who depend on the center for their second chance at a loving home.
