A man and woman in Salem have been arrested after reportedly being caught throwing eggs at unhoused individuals over several nights. According to the Salem Police Department, the 26-year-old man and 20-year-old woman were armed with roughly 225 eggs when apprehended, following witness reports of their car and actions.
Witness accounts led the police to respond to three separate incidents over the last three nights, where they discovered "a considerable amount of broken eggs, discarded egg cartons, and bags of hard-boiled eggs" as evidence at the scenes. These events had prompted an investigation as to why someone would deliberately choose to target and to humiliate those without housing by dousing them in raw and hard-boiled eggs from a moving vehicle.
The pair was found and arrested Friday with the help of witness descriptions, leading law enforcement to their vehicle. According to a report by KGW, around 25 eggs were recovered from inside their car, while more were collected as evidence from the area of Court Street where the attacks occurred.
The suspects have been charged with disorderly conduct and intimidation, the latter charge underlining the bias against individuals based on housing status. It was around 1:30 a.m. near Court Street between Front and Liberty NE when law enforcement was able to finally put an end to this conduct, which had been reported for the third straight night, according to details shared by KOIN. While the suspects have been cited, no further information has been released regarding their identities or motives behind the egging incidents.
