Wednesday, July 9, and last through 8 PM. Thursday, July 10.
According to Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice, "Extreme heat puts pets at serious risk of heatstroke and dehydration." He reminds pet owners to "never leave pets in cars, always provide them with water and shade, and avoid walking them on hot surfaces," as per the County of San Diego. It’s critical to remember that even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a vehicle can rapidly rise to lethal levels after just minutes in the sun. For the safety of pets, the best course of action on hot days is to leave them comfortably at home.
For those who witness a pet left in a car appearing to be in distress, it's worth noting California law does permit individuals to remove such animals from vehicles. Ahead of taking action, calling County Animal Services’ 24/7 emergency line at 619-236-2341 is encouraged; in cases of immediate danger, dialing 911 remains the urgent directive.
Outdoor activities pose another dangerous element, with pet paws susceptible to burns from heated pavement, asphalt, or sand. "If it’s too hot for you to walk barefoot, it’s too hot for your dog," suggests the county's guide. Vaughn Maurice advised pet owners to "stick to grass and shaded paths, and always bring plenty of water for both you and your pet," in tips highlighted by the County of San Diego. Earlier or later hours in the day are the times to choose to prevent overheating and ensure a cooler and safer environment for all.
