San Diego Unified School District is doubling its commitment to student athletics, following a notable uptick in sports participation, with a gain of 13% in student-athlete numbers last year, according to the latest press conference at Clairemont High School. The district announced heavy investments in facilities and equipment, including new uniforms and an array of gear from tennis grips to wrestling headgear. The sports surge, from 12,001 participants in 2018-19 to 13,565 last year, seems to have inspired these sweeping enhancements.
Superintendent Fabi Bagula, Ph.D., at the helm of San Diego Unified, said via the San Diego Unified School District website, "We recognize the wonderful value sports delivers to our students and their families, and we’re doing everything we can to invest in its future." The district has observed the link between athletics and engagement, wellness, leadership, and community spirit. However, the increased participation also places new demands on sporting infrastructure, making the district's investment a timely response.
Funding hasn't only been splashed out on athletic paraphernalia. A number of high school fields have received face-lifts, with others queued up for renovation, including venues at Mira Mesa, Morse, and Lincoln, ensuring that sports teams have quality pitches to match their passion. According to a statement by Lonnie Jones, Middle School Sports Coordinator for San Diego Unified, obtained by the San Diego Unified School District website, they are also ‘giving the student-athletes a voice in the direction we go with it,’ with the introduction of athlete councils in all schools this year.
These councils, coupled with the annual Student Athlete Leadership Summit, are set to empower students like Caroline Tadder and Jaxson Giusti, who stand on the San Diego City Conference Student Athlete Advisory Council, and discuss topics like fan behavior and safety at the summit. Said Sabrina Bazzo, Board of Education Trustee for District A, getting the excitement of scoring a goal can't be replicated in a classroom environment, thus illustrating her point about the significance of sports in a student's holistic education.
As the new school year approaches, San Diego Unified sports teams are gearing up, with fall practices imminent. Among the eight sports that will be active this fall are the newcomers to the scene: girls' flag football, now in its third season. In the previous school year, the district saw sizable success, with twenty-three teams claiming a San Diego Section CIF Championship, four teams taking home regional glory, and Lincoln High bagging the state championship in football.
