The City of San Diego is rolling out the welcome mat for its new Development Services (DSD) headquarters this week, now settling in the heart of Mission Valley at 7650 Mission Valley Road. This central hub will provide many services, including cashier and front counter assistance, appointment-based plan reviews, land development discussions, and self-service stations for those navigating the urban maze of permits and planning.

Boasting proximity to transit and gratis parking options, the headquarters are embracing a new chapter of improved accessibility and convenience. "Our new Mission Valley location provides a drastic improvement for customers in terms of access and convenience," Elyse Lowe, Director of the Development Services Department, remarked in a statement obtained by Inside San Diego. Lowe also noted the site's readiness to serve diverse needs, whether one is angling for permit review, attending public hearings, or merely seeking the answers to swirling questions.

Further marking the calendar, starting July 31, the Mission Valley facility's "The Edric" Hearing Room — a space dedicated to a cherished former DSD staff member — will become the new venue for Planning Commission meetings. Live streams of these gatherings will be available via YouTube, allowing public members to also attend in person. This facility will channel additional services like public hearings on various projects and interactive public workshops, all within the same room.

Aligning more than 500 DSD employees under its Mission Valley roof, the new headquarters departs from the old City Operations Building downtown, which was critiqued for failing to meet modern building standards and its less-than-obvious location. An extra 200 staff members will keep the wheels turning at a secondary site on C Street. By August 8, the move should be in full effect, with records services joining the array at the Mission Valley address.

In the lead-up to the opening, city teams have diligently worked on refurbishing the facility, installing critical telecommunication lines, and setting the stage for broadcasting capabilities within the public hearing room. Customers and staff can look forward to a secure public records viewing area, convenient spaces designed for engaging over development permits, and multiple conference rooms that aim to streamline the plan check process.

San Diegans requiring such services, the city encourages booking appointments via the Development Services website. The availability of various services and open hours are listed online. Alternatively, individuals can also reach out by calling 619-446-5000 for more information.
