Sunset Boulevard is getting a $1.5 million investment to improve infrastructure and support workforce development in San Francisco’s westside corridor. According to a statement from District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio and local leaders, $1 million of the funds will go to the Sunset Boulevard Recycled Water Project to replace potable water with high-quality recycled water. The remaining $500,000 will launch a maintenance and workforce training program.

The funding, secured in the state budget by Senator Scott Wiener, reflects years of advocacy since 2023. City agencies, including Recreation and Parks, Public Works, and the Northern California Laborers Training Center, will oversee the workforce component. Mayor Daniel Lurie also backed the initiative, with Engardio acknowledging his support in a statement shared by SF Rec and Park.

Engardio said the goal is to transform Sunset Boulevard into a green corridor connecting local parks and natural spaces. He noted the area has suffered from drought and aging infrastructure, but sees this investment as a path to revitalization. Wiener praised Engardio and Lurie for leading the charge, while Public Works Director Carla Short emphasized the project’s collaborative nature.

Phil Ginsburg, General Manager of SF Rec and Park, called the upgrade a reflection of the city’s commitment to green spaces. Leonard Gonzales from the Northern California Laborers Training Center added that the project will open doors to unionized maintenance and construction jobs.
