In a tragic incident that has shaken San José, authorities are investigating what has become the city's 13th homicide of the year. On Sunday, San José Police Department officers responded to a distressing scene at Cataldi Park, where they found a 9-year-old child suffering from multiple stab wounds. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Mateusz Dzierbun, was the child's father and the reporting party who prompted the police response, only to confront officers with violence, according to the San José Police Department.
The suspect, armed with a large kitchen knife, had initially refused to comply with officers' directives to disarm, leading to a tense standoff. Eventually, Dzierbun charged at the officers wielding the knife, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The child, despite immediate attempts to provide aid, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Dzierbun, the Fremont resident, was transported to a hospital, where he too was pronounced deceased. These details were shared by the San José Police Department, underscoring the gravity of an event where the protector turned predator.
San José Mayor Matt Mahan expressed his devastation over the incident, saying, as per the San José Police Department, “I cannot imagine how scared this child must have been when the person meant to be their protector became their attacker.”
