In San Martin, a routine patrol turned into a dramatic arrest when Sergeant Carlin of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office encountered a white sedan that nearly collided with his patrol car at high velocity on Center Avenue. The vehicle, displaying erratic behavior, veered off-road in multiple instances before the sergeant's attempt to conduct a stop resulted in a brief pursuit. According to a social media post by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the driver was apprehended close to E. Middle Avenue.
The sheriff's office identified the driver as 28-year-old Junior Bernardino from Gilroy. The office highlighted his alarming record. Bernardino already faced six DUI convictions, which included four felonies, and had experienced 13 episodes of license suspensions. When tested, Bernardino's blood alcohol concentration was found to be a staggering .197, more than twice the allowable legal limit.
An open box of Pacifico beer discovered in the back seat of the vehicle only compounded the distressing set of facts laid out by the deputies. As a consequence of such careless disregard for public safety, Bernardino's vehicle was impounded while the suspect was booked into Main Jail on multiple charges, with DUI being the prominent one. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office reminded: "Drunk driving is dangerous and deadly. This reckless behavior puts everyone on the road at risk."
