Shark sightings at Rockaway Beach on the Fourth of July prompted a temporary flutter of concern and beach closures in the Queens area. Earlier yesterday, two sharks were observed in close proximity to beachgoers near Beach 32nd Street, roughly around 11:30 a.m., according to New York City Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry in a statement reported by ABC7NY. Another marine animal was likewise spotted further up at Beach 144th Street, adding to the day's aquatic excitement.
Officials did not take any chances, with Beach 30th Street being swiftly shut down for about an hour to ensure public safety. Deputy Mayor Daughtry credited modern drone technology and the swift action of lifeguards and NYC Emergency Management professionals for keeping the public out of harm's way. "But thanks to drone tech, lifeguards, and the dedicated professionals at NYC Emergency Management, we're keeping everyone safe as they enjoy the holiday," Daughtry said. This incident follows similar sightings the previous day, implying a pattern of shark visits along this popular stretch of shore, as per ABC7NY.
The beaches were subsequently reopened for swimming once the area was deemed safe. The official stance is one of vigilant monitoring, with Daughtry assuring that the city's officials will continue to keep an eye on the situation and update the public as necessary, as reported by PIX11. This marks the second consecutive day, that sharks have made their presence known off Rockaway's shores.
While shark sightings can be alarming, the response by city officials highlights the importance of the swift response capabilities now in place. Drone technology, in particular, has proved a crucial asset in spotting potential threats from marine life and allowing for quick action to protect beachgoers. "These sightings were very close to beachgoers," Daughtry told, PIX11 underscoring the proximity of the danger. Residents and visitors to Rockaway Beach can expect to see continued safety measures as the summer season progresses.
