As the city buzzes about its day-to-day, the Shelby County Fire Department's newest recruits are deep in the throes of learning the ropes – literally and figuratively. It's a rare glimpse into the meticulous and critical preparation that these men and women undergo before even stepping foot on a fire engine. The SCFD recently took to social media to showcase the intense training regimen, stating, "It's amazing to watch our awesome training division working with our recruits as they progress towards one day soon, being on an engine company."
But beyond the surface, one begins comprehending the importance of even the seemingly minute lessons. "Often times people do not consider what may seem the simplest of things... the proper way to connect hoses with a "gated Y", how to properly get on and off of a fire apparatus or even how a fire fighter has to dress out," the SCFD post explained.
The drill goes like this: an alarm blares, and within two minutes, recruits must overlay their regular uniforms with boots, bunker gear, coat, hood, gloves, helmet, air pack, and tools – leaving not a sliver of skin vulnerable to the brutal kiss of fire. The Shelby County Fire Department paints this picture: "Consider that for a moment, you're wearing a station uniform and the tones drop. In under two minutes, you must be able to fully dress over those clothes by putting on about 70 pounds of gear and equipment and have no skin exposed anywhere."
To witness such a transformation is, by all accounts, awe-inspiring. Imagine an atmosphere where the mercury tips at 101 degrees Fahrenheit – the heat a tangible enemy in itself. These individuals must quickly be prepped to face more than the stifling air outside; they're about to boldly step into an inferno, hotter than "the inside of the oven you use to sear your dinner!" It's a testament to the physical endurance, mental agility, and unwavering resolve of those who commit to this life-saving creed. "What an incredible profession," concludes the SCFD post.
