Following a two-year investigation, a Sherwood man has been indicted on charges of criminal mistreatment and theft involving his late father, as reported in a recent social media post by the Sherwood Police Department. In May of 2023, Sherwood officers initiated a death investigation at the residence of Charles Atkinson Sr. who was found deceased, the scene suggesting extended neglect and decomposition.
The investigation revealed that Charles Atkinson Sr. had been under the care of his son, Charles Atkinson II, who, during his father's struggle with advanced dementia, apparently diverted large sums of money from the elder Atkinson's accounts for personal gains, at the same time neglecting the necessary care expected of him; this discovery led to the subsequent indictment on June 17, 2025. The charges against Atkinson II are "Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree (2 Counts)" and "Theft in the First Degree (4 Counts)", and following a secret indictment arrest warrant, he was arrested by the Sherwood Police Department on June 20, 2025, and taken to the Washington County Jail without incident.
The Sherwood Police Department expressed its gratitude to both Adult Protective Services and the Washington County District Attorney’s Office for their collaboration in what looks to have been a prolonged and complex investigation.
