This morning saw a house fire in West Knoxville, where fortunately no lives were lost thanks to the timely alert of smoke alarms. The Knoxville Fire Department (KFD) responded to an emergency call at approximately 3:00 AM, finding two individuals who had been woken by the alarms and escaped the burning house on the 3100 block of Sanderson Road, as reported by WVLT. Upon arrival, the firefighters, who met with fire and heavy smoke, could tackle the blaze quickly, extinguishing it within 10 minutes.
Despite the swift response, significant damage has rendered the property uninhabitable, with ongoing assessments of fire, smoke, and water damage. "No injuries were reported," Timothy Woods, a spokesperson for KFD, underscored the gravity and fortune of the incident, in which the smoke alarms played a critical role. This sentiment was echoed by KFD, as per WATE, stressing, “This is a good reminder to have working smoke detectors in your home, so you can be alerted to [a fire], especially while residents are sleeping.”
Investigators from the fire department are currently probing the cause of the blaze. Confirmation of these details is still pending, while the displaced residents come to terms with the aftermath of what could have been a life-ending situation. The quick extinguishment of the fire was crucial, but the real heroes, it appears, were the smoke detectors that awoke the residents, allowing them to evacuate in time.
WBIR's coverage of the event highlights the two people inside the home who were asleep at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate the house safely. "Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arriving," a statement that puts into perspective the quick action the responding teams took. As the investigation into the cause of the fire proceeds, the events remain a stark reminder of the importance of functional smoke alarms in the home.
