Get ready to turn the pages of history this summer in Plymouth. The Plymouth History Center is inviting families with elementary-age children to step back in time with a Story Time series at the historic Old Town Hall. Starting July 8, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday until Aug. 26, kids can learn about significant historical topics ranging from the history of the Fourth of July to the lives of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. According to the City of Plymouth, MN announcement, each session will include a hands-on activity to complement the day's theme.
This series isn't just a chance to entertain the little ones—it's a free opportunity for young minds to connect with their community's past. In a statement obtained by the Plymouth History Center, Plymouth Historical Site Coordinator Ryan Barland emphasized the importance of such storytelling. “History is all about storytelling and passing down insights to future generations,” said Barland. “With the reopening of Old Town Hall, we are excited to use the space to share information about Plymouth’s past in a fun and interactive setting.” No registration is needed for families to participate, making it an accessible event for all.
Old Town Hall is a gem in the city, having stood since 1885 as the town’s municipal building. Now, it invites visitors to explore history through a variety of mediums. The building boasts rotating exhibits, a research room with archival newspapers and yearbooks, and a unique audio recording space for oral history projects. Visitors can immerse themselves in photos, historical models, and a rich timeline of the city’s history during its public hours: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as the first Saturday each month.
