A man has been taken into custody on charges of malice murder following a fatal stabbing incident in College Park over the weekend, according to authorities. The Clayton County Sheriff's Office reported that College Park Police were dispatched last Saturday to investigate a report of a stabbing in the 1800 block of Southampton Road. Responding officers discovered a man with a chest stab wound lying in the grass, FOX 5 Atlanta informed.
The injured individual was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to their wounds. Following the incident, detectives from the College Park Police Department identified Jorge Ortega as a suspect. An official warrant for Ortega's arrest was issued, and the City of Clayton County Sheriff’s Office was requested to assist in finding him. They determined Ortega was located in Gwinnett County and collaborated with both the Gwinnett County Police Department and Sheriff's Office to execute the arrest, the Sheriff's Office said.
By 8:30 p.m. last Saturday, Ortega had been arrested and was consequently booked into the Clayton County Jail. The victim's identity has not been disclosed pending family notification.
The swift apprehension of the suspect was the result of inter-agency cooperation. "The Sheriff's Office thanked all the agencies involved with helping deputies arrest Ortega within eight hours of the stabbing," stated the FOX 5 Atlanta report. Meanwhile, Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen expressed his gratitude towards the police forces of both College Park and Gwinnett, as well as the Gwinnett deputies, for their "commitment to the community and the citizens they serve," according to the AJC.
The investigation into the motives and circumstances of the stabbing continues, with no further details released at this time. Jorge Ortega remains in custody and faces the charge of murder as the legal process moves forward.
