Following a tense confrontation with law enforcement outside of a local container plant, an individual accused of opening fire and wounding an employee has been taken into custody. The El Paso Police Department has confirmed that the suspect, identified as Paul Ivan Gonzalez, was involved in an officer-involved shooting incident at the Smurfit Westrock El Paso Container Plant on June 23rd.

According to the El Paso Police Department, officers responded to reports of a subject with a gun at the facility located at 7350 Stiles, at approximately 11:24 P.M. Upon their arrival, law enforcement found multiple employees had evacuated to the safety of the parking lot. It was there in the alleged chaos that Gonzalez reportedly engaged with the officers and was shot during the altercation.

No police officers sustained injuries during this encounter. Both the victim of the initial shooting and Gonzalez received emergency medical treatment on the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further care. As of July 8th, Gonzalez has been released from the hospital and is now being held at the El Paso County Detention Facility, facing charges related to the event.
