
On a seemingly calm evening in Clayton, the unexpected shattered the tranquility when two individuals were confronted with violence. The suspects followed them before unleashing an armed robbery at the intersection of North Central Avenue and Pershing Avenue, the Clayton Police Department announced this incident occurred on July 19.
The victims, during their stroll on North Bemiston Avenue toward Maryland Avenue, encountered the ambush as the suspects, donning black hooded sweatshirts and face coverings, turned west onto Pershing Avenue. According to a statement obtained by the Clayton Police Department, the male victim was shoved to the ground and assaulted, an ordeal from which he is currently recovering at home. The suspects were identified as two Black males, believed to be in their early 20s.
Utilizing community assistance and surveillance footage, detectives were able to promptly develop leads. 18-year-old Javier Clark was arrested on July 24 and is facing charges of Robbery 1st Degree and Assault 3rd Degree – Special Victim, as specified by the officials. Clark is also implicated in other robberies in University City and Normandy, and his cash-only bond is set at $350,000 while he remains at the St. Louis County Justice Center.
A second suspect, a juvenile, was apprehended yesterday. Being processed by the St. Louis County Juvenile Authorities for the charge of Robbery 1st Degree, his identity remains shielded by state law. In an uncommon event for Clayton, this marked the city's first reported robbery of 2025, illustrating the rarity of violent crime within its bounds.
The Clayton Police Department expressed a heartfelt "thank you" to those who provided video and tips, emphasizing the crucial role of community support in policing.
