Residents of Tarrant, Johnson, and Ellis counties are receiving a boost in their fight against auto theft thanks to the collaboration of local law enforcement; the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force is stepping up its efforts to educate the public and prevent crime. According to a post by the Mansfield Police Department on Facebook, the multi-agency team, which includes officers from Mansfield PD among others, is not only focused on catching criminals but also on preemptive measures to keep residents' vehicles safe.

The task force's work has been comprehensive, involving tracking down stolen cars, nabbing perpetrators, recovering what was taken, and breaking apart theft rings, and now they're tackling the issue from another angle, prevention through public education, bundling it with enforcement to create a robust shield for vehicle owners in the region. "One of the most effective tools we offer is VIN etching, which permanently marks your vehicle identification number on your windows—making your car less attractive to thieves and easier to recover if stolen," the Mansfield Police Department stated in the same post.

This initiative provides a crucial service to the community free of charge, showcasing law enforcement's commitment to not only pursuing criminals but also to empowering the community with tools to deter crime. The upcoming event, offering the free VIN etching service, is set to be held at the Midlothian Walmart on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. onwards.
