A serious street racing incident in Naperville has resulted in felony charges for two men, as per authorities. Jadon Ramirez, 18, and Sahil Chauhan, 23, stand accused of aggravated street racing and aggravated reckless driving causing great bodily harm, a report from the Daily Herald detailed. The crash, which occurred in April, left two passengers with severe injuries.
On April 26, after midnight, the accused were reportedly seen street racing in Naperville, a situation which quickly spiraled out of control. The FOX 32 Chicago report indicates that the two were to first race to a red light, then accelerate again passing through. It was during this second stretch that Ramirez, driving a 2006 Mercedes CLS500, is said to have reached speeds upwards of 101 mph before losing control and colliding with a nearby tree.
In the aftermath of the crash, two passengers were ejected from Ramirez’s vehicle. According to officials, a 17-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries including internal brain bleeding and a punctured lung, while an 18-year-old male experienced a broken arm. Both were transported to a hospital for emergency care. Chauhan, identified by police as the driver of a 2024 Acura ZDX, was allegedly involved in the race that led up to the crash.
"Street racing is not just illegal, it is extremely dangerous not just for those behind the wheel, but also for their passengers, other motorists and nearby pedestrians," DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, in a statement obtained by the FOX 32 Chicago. Both Ramirez and Chauhan are facing serious legal consequences, as each of the charges they face are Class 4 felonies, which could result in up to three years imprisonment. Ramirez has been detained ahead of trial, while Chauhan has been released but is due to reappear in court later in July.
These events have prompted a strong response from local law enforcement, reaffirming the dangers of such recklessness on public roads. "There is absolutely no excuse for the type of dangerous and reckless driving alleged in this case," Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres told the Daily Herald. Both men are awaiting their next court appearances, with Ramirez's scheduled for July 18 and Chauhan's for July 28, as the legal proceedings continue.
