Adding to their coaching roster, the University of Utah softball team has snagged Karl Gollan to fill the spot as their new assistant coach and pitching guru. The announcement came through like a fastball down the middle, with head coach Amy Hogue expressing high expectations for her latest recruit. "Karl is a player's coach," she said, per UtahUtes.com. "He knows what it takes to win at the highest level and our athletes are going to love learning from him."
Despite only acting as head coach for Iowa's final 34 games of the 2025 season, winning is familiar territory for Gollan. After ending his more than a quarter-century spanning career as a player, including helping New Zealand's National Team rake in world titles, he took his knack for victory to coaching. Hogue firmly believes that Karl's winning experience and his approach to connecting with the team will serve as a treasure for the program.
Gollan's track record isn't lightweight; it's lined with notable stints and accomplishments worth a tip of the cap. His time with Iowa saw him tutor Jalen Adams, a pitcher who racked up awards like a pro, including all-conference and all-region honors. While with the Ole Miss Rebels in 2024, his leadership contributed to an NCAA Tournament berth and an impressive team ERA. Not to mention, guiding Augustana Vikings in 2023 to a third-place finish, an upset considering their forecasted last place.
With a history of molding top-tier pitchers under his belt, Gollan's prep work in player development, game strategies, and lineup designations is paying off with his consistent upward trajectory in coaching roles. The former professional pitcher, who once slung strikes for New Zealand's Black Sox and earned four First Team All-World selections, is now slated to share his expertise at Salt Lake City. Not letting the grass grow under their feet, Utah is eager to push for high-performance results. "I am extremely appreciative to Amy and everyone involved in the decision to bring me to the University of Utah," Gollan remarked, according to UtahUtes.com.
