In a move that has received high praise from local government, the Utah Transportation Commission recently diverted a cool $2.9 million in state funds from a future Provo North I-15 Interchange Study to address more pressing infrastructure needs in the region; Mayor Michelle Kaufusi has voiced her support for the reallocation, suggesting that the Geneva Road corridor could benefit from the newfound financial attention.
The commission made a unanimous decision to forgo the long-term study, aligning itself with Provo's priorities. Provo is now setting its sights on reconstructing the aging 820 North Bridge over the Provo River, whose deteriorating condition has become an urgent safety issue for the city. Mayor Kaufusi commended the commission's move, stating in a statement to commissioners, "I commend the UDOT team on their decision to redirect the funds to a higher community priority," and highlighted the significance of refreshing the environmental study or beginning improvements on the Geneva Road project, as obtained by City of Provo.
Amidst wide public engagement and numerous meetings with the public, the Mayor touted the move as a positive step, providing a much-needed reprieve before embarking on such a long-term project; the bridge is already over 60 years old and showing signs of significant wear and a design that no longer caters to current transportation needs, especially with the added pressure from a growing population and more active transportation methods in the area.
