Wakefield, a Boston suburb, has seen the end of an era with the closure of Brother's Deli & Restaurant, a cafeteria-style eatery that's been serving up home-cooked meals for decades. The long-standing establishment shut its doors definitively last Sunday, according to a post on the eatery's Facebook page, MassLive reported.
The restaurant, which once embodied a sense of community on Main Street, could not sustain its operations much longer after Jimmy and Maria Assimakopoulos decided to retire and sold the business in 2023. The Facebook post lamented the closure, expressing that, "This wasn’t what we had hoped for and continuing on was no longer sustainable," a sentiment echoed by Boston 25 News. Having operated for 38 years, the restaurant had been sold to PK Brothers, Inc., in hopes of keeping the tradition alive.
The post on Facebook further reflected on the tight-knit relationship between the restaurant and its patrons, stating, "You made this place feel like home, not just to us, but to so many others," as detailed by MassLive. The news of its closure has certainly come as a blow to those who viewed the restaurant as an integral part of the community fabric.
Brother's Deli & Restaurant was popular for offering a blend of Greek- and American-style cuisine, becoming a local fixture where patrons not just ate, but formed connections amidst the casual backdrop of TV screens and daily specials. According to a retirement recognized by the Wakefield Town Council and reported by Boston 25 News, the Assimakopoulos duo, the original owners, were considered to have made Brother's “a Wakefield institution.”
As of now, there are no announced plans for the establishment to reopen under new ownership, despite the parting post hinting at the possibility. As Brother's Deli & Restaurant leaves behind its legacy on 404 Main St., Wakefield, as per MassLive.
