A Washington County home invasion has turned fatal, with a mother killed and her son wounded. According to WPXI, Michael Pyles, 37, of West Virginia, is behind bars facing multiple charges, including homicide and attempted homicide. The authorities responded to the incident on June 16, just after 1 a.m., finding Renee Lynn Gill, 37, dead at the scene, and her son survived despite being shot in the hand.
State police have pieced together a narrative of a premeditated burglary gone awry, pointing to text messages and social media communications as evidence of a plot involving Gill and one of the suspects. The son managed to share a few last words with his dying mother. This interaction was reportedly relayed to 911 dispatchers in the harrowing moments before she succumbed to her injuries. Additional details emerged from an interview with Trooper Rocco Gagliardi, who explained the escalation of robbery to homicide was driven by greed, as reported by CBS News.
The second man implicated in the tragic event is Walter Winland Jr., who is set to face official charges, including homicide. During their investigation, the authorities became suspicious of an inside connection, which was later confirmed by the eventual arrest of Winland in Wheeling on June 20th. Among the items found in his possession were glassine packets similar to those discovered at Gill's residence.
District Attorney Jason Walsh spoke to the personal dynamics at play, revealing Winland was not a stranger to the household, having lived there and recently been thrown out. The case has also shed light on the extent of the planning behind the crime, with reports indicating that Pyles' girlfriend aided in the interstate escape effort. In Ohio and West Virginia, the couple allegedly destroyed evidence and discarded the weapon, as Gagliardi emphasized the case's expansion beyond localized criminal activity.
As this investigation continues to unfold, more charges are expected. Both suspects are currently in custody, with Pyles in Ohio and Winland in West Virginia, pending further legal proceedings.
