In a statement, Ferguson lamented, "The cost of the president’s devastating trade war is only escalating," spotlighting a 16.3% drop in international imports and a striking 20% decrease in truck transactions at Washington's ports, statistics made public by the Governor's office.
With a clear eye on the numbers, Governor Ferguson described the harsh realities facing the state, acknowledging that its agricultural export market, valued at $7.6 billion in 2024, experienced a 36% shipment decline to China in May compared to the previous year. These drops signal trouble, especially given the importance of trade to Washington's economic stability. "Our agricultural industry — a cornerstone of Washington's economy — has seen a steep drop in shipments, longstanding trade relationships are fraying," mentioned the Governor, who also called out the resulting "lost jobs and dampened economic momentum for our region."
Jumping into action, Governor Ferguson has not only vocally condemned the federal trade policies but also took concrete steps to counter their impact, leading a coalition in support of a lawsuit challenging the tariffs. In May, along with 24 public and private partners, Governor Ferguson filed an amicus brief, arguing against what they deemed an "unlawful, arbitrary, and ever-changing tariff policy."
