Residents of West Woodlawn are on high alert after a series of burglaries were reported in the area. The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert, notifying the public of a spate of break-ins that have rattled the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District. In these incidents, doors or garage doors were forcefully opened, with construction materials, power tools, and other items taken by an unknown assailant.

According to the police department, the series of burglaries occurred at various locations throughout West Woodlawn, including the 6300 block of S. Champlain, and extended over the course of several days starting on June 22, 2025. Other incidents followed on the 6400 block of S. Eberhart, the 6400 block of S. Rhodes, and again on the 6500 block of S. Rhodes Avenue. The suspect is described as an unknown Black male, and residents are urged to take caution and report any suspicious activities.

Authorities are encouraging the local community to stay vigilant and to be aware of their surroundings. The Chicago Police advise not to confront a would-be assailant but rather to focus on remembering distinctive features that could aid in the offender's identification. "Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)," law enforcement officials recommend in the notice.

The Chicago Police Department further suggests safeguarding oneself and the community by never pursuing a fleeing suspect, but rather providing detailed information to the police. Residents with access to security footage that captures any suspicious activity are urged to save a copy for detectives. "If video surveillance is available, save a copy of the incident for detectives," the police guidance states. In cases where witnesses are present, it is recommended to request their contact information and ensure that 9-1-1 is called immediately, with the caller remaining on the scene when possible.
