In a straightforward apprehension in Sweetwater, a Wisconsin man on the run was finally caught after a less-than-cunning attempt at evasion, authorities reported. Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones told WVLT, detectives from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and officers from the Sweetwater Police Department found Dylan Lee Sockness hiding under a blanket during the execution of a warrant on Wednesday.
Sockness, 29, who was wanted for a violation of probation tied to an aggravated battery charge in Wisconsin, was discovered in a home on Hawkins Road. Despite his attempt to escape detection by law enforcement, his under-the-blanket hideaway did not suffice. "Mr. Sockness was taken into custody after attempting to hide under a blanket," Sheriff Tommy Jones revealed in a social media post. Earlier encounters with law enforcement yielded no arrests due to Sockness providing a false name and information.
In addition to his Wisconsin charge, Sockness now faces local charges of making false reports and being a fugitive from justice, as he remains held at the Monroe County Jail without bond. The added charges stem from earlier deception with the authorities. According to a report by WATE News, during prior encounters with law enforcement, "Mr. Sockness had encounters with law enforcement however, he provided a false name and false information." His history of misleading officials compounded his legal troubles upon capture.
The capture of Sockness concludes a period of evasion that spanned both time and state lines. "Mr. Sockness was wanted out of the State of Wisconsin for Violation of Parole for Aggravated Battery with full extraction," Sheriff Jones wrote in the same social media announcement. With multiple jurisdictions interested in his whereabouts, Sockness's attempts to stay under the radar were always bound to be fleeting. The authorities had been keeping a careful eye out, ready to draw the curtain on his tenure as a fugitive.
