A tragic hit-and-run incident on Chicago's Southwest Side has left a young woman dead and her fiancé seriously injured, as reported by CBS News Chicago. Marcela Herrera, 22, was struck by a silver vehicle while crossing the street with her 21-year-old fiancé at the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue, according to police statements. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene post-collision, leaving the couple to desperately require medical attention.
The couple had just enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the Tacos and Tamales festival, and the incident occurred late Saturday night, just after 11:00 p.m., ABC7 Chicago reported. Herrera was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, while her fiancé remains in serious condition. The anticipation of their forthcoming wedding has been unjustly replaced with funeral preparations, underscoring a sudden and heart-wrenching shift of fate for the family.
Herrera, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and celebrated for her kindness, outgoing personality, and dedication to her family, had the "world ahead of her," according to her cousin Montse Parrera in a statement obtained by ABC7 Chicago. Parrera reflected on the preventable nature of the accident, saying, "This just goes to show things can change from one day to the next." The family has since been canvassing the area, asking for any information or video evidence that could assist in locating the individual responsible for Herrera's death.
In the aftermath, the grieving family is urging the public to come forward with any details that may lead to an arrest. "I'm asking for help. Just maybe pretend that this is something that your family is going to through," Parrera told ABC7 Chicago. Despite the ongoing investigation by Chicago police's Major Accidents Investigation Unit, no arrests have yet been made. The poignant pleas of the family highlight the very personal toll of what has become an all-too-common tragedy on city streets.
