A 14-year-old boy from Detroit has been charged with several offenses following a carjacking incident that ended in a high-speed crash. According to a report from The Detroit News, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced the charges, which include receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The incident took place around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, when the juvenile allegedly took control of a 45-year-old Detroit woman's vehicle and then crashed it near Rockdale and Majestic Avenue. In the chaos following the crash, officers apprehended the teen after a brief chase. CBS Detroit reports that the suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash, the specifics of which were not detailed by authorities.
A secondary source of information, CBS Detroit, revealed that the youth is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at the Juvenile Detention Facility within the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center. This comes as the latest in a disturbing trend of carjackings involving minors in the Detroit area.
Additional information from FOX 2 Detroit noted that the stolen vehicle, identified as a Kia, had flipped and caught fire as a result of the crash. The chaotic scene placed another layer onto the dangerous episode that, fortunately, did not result in loss of life or more severe trauma to the parties involved. Another teen who was also in the stolen vehicle was released to his parents, suggesting that the journey was shared but the consequences, deeply personal and potentially life-altering for the one at the wheel.
