DeKalb County Schools celebrated the commencement of a significant renovation plan for Cross Keys High School with a groundbreaking ceremony this Thursday, indicating a long-awaited transformation of the educational facilities after a decade of delays. The school, a beacon of learning for around 1,600 students from various Atlanta areas, is embarking on a $148 million journey to revamp its antiquated infrastructure, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta. Superintendent Devon Horton expressed the district's goal for equity and opportunity, stating, "We want to make sure that our students and families that are served by this magnet school receive everything that they rightfully deserve."
Serving as a tangible example of a commitment to improving student conditions, the renovation project for Cross Keys High School, where the original structure dates back to the 1950s, will introduce new restrooms, courtyards, baseball fields, an auditorium, music suites, and a media center. Also included are redesigned bus and car drop-off areas, aimed to streamline the chaos of school rush hours. As the district boasts the project's allegiance to opportunity, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quotes Horton: "Here is an example in which we are getting a wrong right." Despite the previous uncertainty and frustration caused by prolonged postponements and community protests, the project has finally launched, to the relief of teachers and students alike.
While upgrades such as a new sports complex and an updated HVAC system might seem mundane, they are pivotal in enhancing the learning environment. Ayvonne Reese, a teacher and Parent Teacher Association member at the school, echoed this sentiment to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "I feel like it's going to boost the esteem of the school, boost the esteem of the students and help them take more pride in the school." The extensive renovation aims to be completed by 2028 and includes substantial additions like two new buildings that will house the front office, media center, cafeteria, classrooms, and performing arts center.
While Cross Keys High celebrates its phoenix mascot, symbolizing rebirth, the DeKalb County district simultaneously juggles other expansive educational investments. Around $235 million is slated for the new construction of Sequoyah Middle and Sequoyah High in Doraville. Additionally, debate continues over the proposed renovation or relocation of Druid Hills High, which could carry a price tag upwards of $200 million. Meanwhile, in the midst of these financial outpours and decision-making, interim Principal Roberta Gibson spoke about the significance of revitalization at Cross Keys High, telling The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "We’re not just breaking ground. We are reimagining our future."
