A 32-year-old woman was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident in the Bronx. The tragic event occurred just after midnight near the intersection of Leggett Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard in the Longwood neighborhood. According to Gothamist, responding officers discovered the woman with severe injuries lying in the street.
The emergency services rushed her to Lincoln Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigations are underway to determine whether the woman was walking or riding a bike when she was struck. As of now, police have not to successfully provide a description of the suspect vehicle nor made any arrests related to the incident. The deceased's identity has been withheld as efforts to notify her kin continue.
ABC7 reported that no vehicle remained on the scene, indicating that the unidentified woman was likely a victim of a hit-and-run. ABC7's coverage further confirms that the event happened around 12:10 a.m., also placing it at Bruckner Boulevard and Leggett Avenue.
The frequency of traffic-related deaths in the Bronx has seen a decline this year, with NYPD data showing 18 fatalities up through August 24, compared to 34 by this time in the previous year, the Gothamist notes. Across the city, there has also been a 24% drop in traffic deaths year over year. Pedestrians have sadly represented nearly half of these deaths in the Bronx for the year thus far.
