In a testament to the human spirit's resilience, 71-year-old Jim DiBernardo, affectionately known as Dibo, will brave the waters between Alcatraz Island and San Francisco once again, this time with a noble cause propelling his strokes.

Having previously completed the swim in his 40s, the retired Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office major is not only challenging his own limits but raising awareness and funds for Embrace House, a South Florida non-profit supporting victims of human trafficking, according to NBC Miami. Dibo has so far raised over $30,000 in contributions towards his $50,000 goal, as reported by WJNO.

"I am ready to go, I’ve trained hard, I feel good," DiBernardo told NBC Miami, reflecting on his preparation, which included swimming in Vermont’s strong Bingham Falls currents to mimic the challenging conditions of San Francisco Bay; the Alcatraz Open Swim is set to take place this Sunday with Dibo among the participants.

Maria Santamaria, DiBernardo's former Administrative Assistant and current Director of Embrace House, shared her admiration for his dedication by stating to NBC Miami: "He has never asked for anything other than to explain to him what human trafficking is. He has never asked to meet any of the survivors; he has never asked for anything, so that shows the kindness of his heart."

Those inspired by Dibo's story and mission can contribute to his cause by visiting his official Donor Box Page, with a target of being among the top 150 finishers of the approximately 700 participants. Dibo predicts that he will finish strong, not just for himself but for the beneficiaries of Embrace House.
