Commuters across Alameda and Contra Costa counties face a major shift as the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) rolled out comprehensive changes to its bus network yesterday. An initiative two years in the making, dubbed Realign, has overhauled the service for the approximately 3 million monthly riders who traverse from Richmond to Fremont. As students and workers adjust to a new routine, they’re urged to prepare for altered frequencies, new routes, and some discontinued lines.
According to the information released by AC Transit, Realign is a response to evolving patterns in ridership and the need to allocate resources more effectively, especially in the wake of the pandemic-induced shift to more hybrid and remote work arrangements. Designed with an ear to public input, "Realign is an ambitious effort to right-size the bus network in response to hybrid and remote work trends, changing ridership patterns, and ongoing fiscal challenges," the transit agency stated. As a part of the changes, 104 bus lines will see adjustments that vary by route, including frequency adjustments at neighborhood stops, and some lines will see changes to how often buses arrive.
AC Transit is also upgrading its infrastructure to accommodate the new changes. Commuters can expect improvements across more than 1,500 bus stops, boasting new signage and clear markings to direct riders through the updated network. Clear bags marked at bus stops will indicate whether a stop serves a new or existing line, and zip-tied pole signs will provide the stop-specific information for a smoother transition.
