In a coordinated operation on Friday, the Athens Police Department, alongside various city services, responded to an animal welfare concern, resulting in the discovery and rescue of over 40 dogs from a residence on Haley Street. Authorities described the living conditions within the home as "deplorable," leading to the owner's arrest on charges of animal cruelty, as reported by WVLT.

The initial police response was to a service call about animals on the property, the situation escalated when officers failed to make contact with the homeowner and observed several more animals inside, in poor condition, consequently, a search warrant was obtained, according to WATE. The effort included multiple city services like the McMinn County Humane Society, Public Works Department, Codes Enforcement, Athens Fire Department, and Adult Protective Services, who assisted in the rescue operation.

The animals, described as small breed dogs, were subsequently transported to the McMinn County Humane Society for health assessments and necessary treatment after being removed from what was characterized as a "dilapidated" home. The intervention was necessary given the pressing health concerns of the rescued dogs.

Expressing gratitude for the collaborative rescue efforts, Athens Police Lieutenant Blake Witt underscored the importance of giving a voice to defenseless animals, stating, "I am thankful for the cooperation amongst all the agencies involved," and he also said, "Their enforcement presence and swift action will hopefully give a voice to the animals that cannot speak to this type of cruelty," his remarks shared via WBIR. The Athens Police Department encourages local community members to report any suspicions of animal abuse or neglect to aid in prevention and protection efforts.
