Residents in Athens, Georgia have been cautioned by local police to avoid throwing batteries in the trash or recycling bins, due to the potential risk of fires. According to the Athens Police Department, batteries are the leading cause of fires at the area's solid waste facilities and on garbage trucks. WSBTV reports this warning comes after incidents where discarded batteries have caused fires that resulted in significant damages.
In a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, the police department elaborated on the issue, saying, "One misplaced battery can spark a fire on a garbage truck, leading to $60,000 in damages and a risk to workers and the community." The risk stems from batteries overheating, as well as being crushed, punctured, or causing a short circuit when they come into contact with other metal objects in the trash. These situations can cause uncontrolled electricity flow that may ignite.
Fortunately, for Athens residents looking to dispose of their batteries safely, there are several designated drop-off locations. The county has provided free battery recycling at facilities such as CHaRM on College Avenue, ACC Solid Waste on Hancock Industrial Way, and the ACC Landfill on Lexington Road. Additionally, batteries can be dropped off at local fire stations on Cleveland Road, Danielsville Road, and Jefferson Road.
The community also has the option to recycle batteries at university and retail locations, including UGA, Lowe's, Batteries Plus, and Best Buy. For those seeking more information about the proper recycling of batteries, the Recycling Division can be reached at (706) 613-3501 ext. 8.
