Boston's very own Mayor Michelle Wu has thrown the spotlight on the legendary R&B group New Edition with a day of dedicated celebration. According to a statement from the City of Boston, a series of events is slated for August 30, featuring a street naming ceremony and a community block party to commemorate the influence of the Roxbury-nurtured band.
Renowned for bringing a fresh breath of R&B to the music scene as early as 1978, New Edition's journey began right in the heart of Boston's Orchard Park Projects. In celebration of their 42-year career, the officials of Boston, led by Mayor Wu, will host activities throughout the city to honor the band's immeasurable contributions, which include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and inductions into both the Black Music and National Rhythm & Blues Halls of Fame. Mayor Wu expressed immense pride, declaring that "It is an honor to welcome home Roxbury natives New Edition," in a statement obtained by the City of Boston. Founding member Ricky Bell couldn't hide his elation, saying, "This honor is mind-blowing in the most awesome way. 02119 IS and WILL always be my home."
According to the City of Boston, as noted in the official announcement, the section of Dearborn Street will soon bear the moniker of "New Edition Way." This gesture stands as a testament to their homegrown status and everlasting bond with Boston's communities. Mayor Wu shows her support, designating August 30 as "New Edition Day," a permanent fixture in the city calendar.
The festivities commence at 10:00 a.m. with the street naming ceremony at the intersection of Ambrose & Albany Streets in Roxbury. Following closely, the community block party will be staged in front of Orchard Gardens Boys & Girls Club from 11:00 a.m., promising a day brimming with music, free food, and family-friendly activities, along with a special appearance by the honored group. John Borders IV, Director of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment for the City of Boston, proclaimed, "We are truly excited to bring the community together" when interviewed by the City of Boston. The music of New Edition is intertwined with the threads of Boston's cultural landscape, influencing generations and continuing to inspire new musical acts to this day.
