Commuters in Phelps and Pulaski counties might need to take a deep breath and plan ahead as two bridges over I-44 are set to shut down for repairs soon. Starting the week of August 18, the Missouri Department of Transportation kicks off a project to rejuvenate six ailing bridges, which is aimed at prolonging their lifespan and ensuring safety for future travel. MoDOT announced the details of the closures, with the bridge on Pulaski County Route 28 in St. Robert set to close on August 18 and the one on Phelps County Route D about 7 miles southwest of Doolittle following suit on August 25.
Detours are in place for the affected spans, and although this might extend some daily commutes, they're necessary to bypass the construction. Motorists driving on Route 28 in St. Robert will be detoured via I-44 to either Exit 161 or Exit 169, and for those accustomed to Route D, the detour will usher cars through I-44 to Exits 169 or 176, then back on the westbound route to Exit 172. While the inconvenience is inevitable, the ramps at Exit 172 and Exit 163 will thankfully stay open throughout the duration of the repairs.
MoDOT's plan includes more upgrades beyond the first two bridges. Work is also scheduled for Phelps County Route E, Route J, County Road 8490 (Sugar Tree Road), and Business U.S. 44/Kingshighway in Rolla, with projects continuing into 2026. The entire effort is expected to finish by the end of September 2026, weather permitting. For updates, detours, and closure details, drivers can visit MoDOT's website.
