A Bristol man, Christopher S. Coffey, faces charges after being indicted for alleging false accusations against local police officers. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced that Coffey had been charged with two counts of making false reports about sexual assault and harassment by Bristol Police Department officers.
The investigation, which unfolded at the request of 2nd Judicial District Attorney General Barry Staubus in October 2024, scrutinized Coffey's claims that he was sexually assaulted by a Bristol officer during a search at the Sullivan County Jail on August 12, 2023. Coffey also reported repeated harassment by the officers at his home. However, the TBI investigation found these allegations to be unsubstantiated.
Coffey, who turned himself in, was booked into the Sullivan County Jail with a bond set at $10,000. As the judicial process moves forward, it is important to remember that the charges against Coffey are not evidence of guilt. According to the TBI, "The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law."
