Longstanding Brookline Village gem, Curds & Co., announced its upcoming closure, ending eight years of providing a curated selection of cheeses and related delights. Slated to close on September 12, the specialty cheese shop has been unsuccessful in its search for a new owner since the original proprietors, Jenn and Matt Mason, relocated to Sicily in 2023. According to a notice on the Curds & Co. website, the Masons have called for a celebration of thanks in this final month. They expressed intent to "go out on a high note" though the search for new leadership did not pan out.
During the shop's concluding chapter, a variety of events are planned, including last classes, tastings, and opportunities for customers to purchase cheeses and gifts. The Masons have initiated a “monger after-care fund,” to be split among the team and added to their severance. This was detailed in a statement in the Brookline Village cheese purveyor's farewell note, inviting community members to contribute as an expression of support. The blog Boston Restaurants highlights Curds & Co.'s past dedication to weekly "cheese school" classes and an array of charcuterie offerings, services that the Village will soon be without.
The Masons also extended thanks to those who have kept the shop afloat in recent times, with a particular note of gratitude towards their daughters, Becky and Abi, and their landlord, Richard Allen. In their public farewell, as noted by Brookline.News, they commended the individuals maintaining operations amidst their final efforts to secure a new store owner.
For the regular patrons and the Brookline community at large, Curds & Co. represents more than just a cheese shop; it has been a local institution. The Masons, reflecting on the memorable years, were quoted stating, “These 8 years have been amazing and you all have been some of the greatest humans I’ve ever known.” While the store might be known for slinging the Swiss and pouring the sauv blanc, for those who donned a C&Co apron, the greatest loss, as reported by Brookline.News, will be the hamlet of ‘cheesedom’ itself, as per Boston Restaurants.
