The annual Clear the Shelters campaign, aimed at finding homes for animals in need, began today with a push from Animal Care, the designated pet adoption and animal welfare agency for Broward County. In partnership with NBC 6's Clear the Shelters, the initiative will run through the month of August, as reported during "South Florida Live" today. The program broadcasts at 12:30 PM, offering a view into the heart of the County's pet adoption efforts, and how residents can contribute by adopting, fostering, or promoting the cause, according to Broward County's news release.
Consistent with past years' efforts to boost adoptions, this year, Broward County Animal Care is eliminating all pet adoption fees throughout the campaign's duration, a gesture designed to encourage would-be pet owners to step forward. A standard pet tag fee, however, will still be in place for new pet parents. Shelter doors are open every day from 11 AM to 6 PM at 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale, and possible pet adopters can preview their furry friends at PetAdoptions.Broward.org.
In a statement obtained by the NBC 6's Clear the Shelters segment, Doug Brightwell, Director of Broward County Animal Care, expressed the sentiment behind the annual campaign: "When you adopt from our shelter, you are not just saving a life - you are strengthening a community. We are honored to help launch this effort in South Florida," he said. "This is a powerful opportunity to save lives and promote responsible pet ownership," as noted by the county's website.
Since its inception in 2015, the Clear the Shelters initiative has significantly impacted animal welfare, finding homes for more than 1.2 million pets nationally. Locally, the push by Broward County Animal Care mirrors the national agenda, aiming to improve animal services, assure public safety with equitable practices, and maintain high standards in shelter operations.
