As the start of the school year approaches, bus drivers across Broward County Public Schools are taking to the streets to prepare for their new routes. These test runs are aimed to familiarize drivers with the paths they will navigate to ensure the safe transport of students come Monday. Broward County is placing emphasis on safety and readiness, with one veteran bus driver commenting to NBC Miami, "It’s more than driving a bus."

Yesterday, drivers did dry runs of their assigned paths, including Conrad Brown, who is set to drive one of the district's new electric buses. He asserted to NBC Miami, "Love the kids, like the job." Brown is one of over 800 drivers who was trained to not only drive but also to interact efficiently with the kids. His new electric bus is part of a fleet that will be taking to the streets, absent the loud engine noise but equipped with a commitment to student safety and comfort.

According to a statement obtained by 7News, Robert, a BCPS bus driver, said, "I interact with the kids, and I make sure they are happy and comfortable with me." He also mentioned the district's initiative to install cameras and panic buttons in school buses alongside training drivers in de-escalation techniques. While a typical bus can hold up to 65 students, Robert noted that he usually manages around 100 students daily, emphasizing the importance of behavior and safety protocols.

Dr. Simone Clowers, the district's transportation director, told NBC Miami that bus drivers have undergone an extra 30 hours of training in addition to the 40 hours required by the state. The additional instruction focuses on equipping drivers to effectively manage on-board situations and uphold the school bus as a safe and structured environment, similar to a moving classroom. Clowers emphasized that ensuring students are safe, secure, and well-cared for remains the top priority. Adam Cervera, a Broward School Board member, backed this approach by highlighting the district’s dedication to providing all transportation professionals with the proper training.

Additionally, the district is taking steps to keep parents informed with the introduction of the "Here Comes the Bus" app, which was discussed by both Robert and Cervera in interviews with 7News and NBC Miami, respectively. This app will enable parents to keep a virtual eye on their children's journey to and from school.
