According to the University of Cincinnati's announcement, this campaign was a tribute to individuals who donated platelets at least three times throughout April and May.
Exceeding any prior benchmarks, over 400 people qualified for this singular experience, a testament to the expansive generosity residing in the Hoxworth's donor community. On July 26, during the ballgame where the Reds took on the Tampa Bay Rays, the donors, having given countless platelets, were celebrated before a stadium of cheering fans. Hoxworth leaders, taking the field before the start, recognized and thanked the attendees publicly – everyday heroes whose donations provide a lifeline to those in need.
Dr. David Oh, MD, co-director and chief medical officer at Hoxworth, reflected on the event's significance: "Pitching for Platelets was an incredible celebration of the generosity and impact of our platelet donors," he shared in a statement obtained by the University of Cincinnati. "Their commitment makes a difference for local patients every single day, and this event was a small but meaningful way for us to show our gratitude." The partnership with the Reds not only celebrated existing donors but also aimed to raise awareness of the continuous need for platelet donations within the Cincinnati community.
