In a significant development for emergency services, the Cobb County Department of Emergency Communications (DEC) has completed a technological overhaul, introducing AI capabilities into their 911 system. This makes them the largest in metro Atlanta to implement such advanced features, as reported by the Cobb County Government. Callers in distress can now stream video directly from their incident location, potentially providing first responders with real-time visual context. Additionally, the system now includes real-time translation services, aiming to bridge language gaps on the spot.

These changes are part of the DEC's move to Next Generation 911 (NG911). The upgraded infrastructure is IP-based and comes with AT&T’s ESInet service, which promises more accurate caller locations, better routing of emergency calls to the appropriate 911 center, and faster call delivery. This upgrade enhances the traditional voice-only 911 system with a capacity for multimedia communication. It also improves the system's resilience in the face of possible high call volumes, disasters, or other forms of disruption, according to the information provided by the Cobb County Government.

Cobb County's DEC has further adopted the Carbyne APEX call-handling platform, imbued with AI, which upgrades their emergency response strategies. "These upgrades represent a major step forward in how we serve our community," said Melissa Alterio, Director of the Cobb County Department of Emergency Communications. The platform's features include AI-assisted translation, transcription, emergency call triage, and the ability for dispatchers to direct live video and messaging interactions during calls, as noted by the same release.

The transition towards this smarter system was helmed by Deputy Director of Technical Services Kevin Gardner and his team, who worked in collaboration with the Cobb County Information Technology Services Department, Carbyne, and AT&T. The improvements envision not just enhancing the emergency response times but also the overall quality of service provided to the county's residents, visitors, and first responders. The DEC's commitment to providing professional and efficient service, as highlighted by the Cobb County Government announcement, is further underscored by these extensive technological advancements.
