In a recent development from Cocke County, Constable John Shropshire has been indicted with a charge of rape. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation disclosed that Shropshire, a 25-year-old, is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at her residence in November 2024, as reported by TBI Newsroom. A grand jury returned the indictment earlier this week.
Shropshire, who also served as a member of the Newport Rescue Squad, has been in the public eye since his election as a fifth district constable in 2022. The office, as confirmed to WBIR, is a four-year term. The specifics regarding whether Shropshire has resigned from his elected position or remains with the rescue squad are uncertain, as both the county election administrator, Josh Blanchard, and the Cocke County CJ, Ball, have not provided definitive statements on his current status.
The indictment led Shropshire to turn himself in yesterday, culminating in his booking at the Cocke County Jail. The bond set was $7,500, as mentioned in a news release obtained by WVLT. Details from the booking sheet showed that he was processed and released within a span of approximately 47 minutes.
In the light of these allegations, the legal process now confronts Shropshire with the grave responsibility to defend himself against the charges levied upon him. It is essential to remember, as stated by the TBI, that the charges and allegations are merely accusations of criminal conduct and not evidence of guilt. "The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law."
