The Colorado Springs community is mourning the loss of a dedicated hero, retired Captain Patrick Rogacki of the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD), who passed away on August 1. His death is marked as a Line of Duty Death due to a long battle with an aggressive form of job-related cancer, as detailed by the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
According to the same statement, Captain Rogacki's illness was tied to his time working at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks. As a part of Colorado Task Force 1, Rogacki spent countless hours amidst the perilous debris, focusing on search, safety, and recovery operations. Joining the CSFD in 1979 and retiring in 2014, Rogacki served in various capacities over his 35-year career, including the High Angle Rescue Program and as a Medical Lieutenant.
Fire Chief Randy Royal praised Captain Rogacki for his substantial contributions, noting, "Captain Rogacki served our community and citizens with excellence for 35 years. He was a passionate and dedicated firefighter who always went above and beyond...We are saddened that his service at Ground Zero led to his passing, but we are proud of the positive impacts he made locally and nationally." This sentiment was shared in the released statement by the Colorado Springs Fire Department, honoring the late captain's service and dedication both to the local community and across the nation in times of disaster.
Rogacki also made significant contributions to the CSFD's operational knowledge, having helped create the "High Angle Rescue Techniques and Procedures" manual, which continues to aid firefighters in executing high-angle rescues safely. His devotion extended beyond the line of duty, marked by his leadership within the CSFD Honor Guard and participation in numerous memorial services for fallen firefighters.
The fire department is currently planning a private memorial service for the late captain, inviting the community to show their support for Rogacki's family by lining the streets during the funeral procession.
