Earlier this month, a routine parole check turned harrowing as Putnam County Sheriff's deputies discovered drugs within arms' reach of two children in a Cookeville apartment. WKRN reports that on August 6, deputies followed the homeowner's two children to a bedroom, only to find multiple baggies and digital scales lying on the bed. Officials instructed the children to vacate the room upon spotting drug paraphernalia.

Further investigation revealed a particularly distressing find: one digital scale was smeared with what deputies believed to be fentanyl, a synthetic opioid far more potent than heroin. According to FOX 17, a bag with 1.9 grams of a pink powdered substance, along with hypodermic needles, shared the same accessible space as the children. A small bag containing methamphetamine was also discovered mere feet from where the children were instructed to sit.

The adult residents, Patti and Ryan Jaeger, were on the scene, and during questioning, Ryan admitted to owning the fentanyl and that both he and his wife used drugs in that bedroom. WSMV reports that the couple was arrested and each was charged with two counts of child abuse and one count of manufacture, sale, and delivery of a controlled substance.

Authorities acted swiftly to ensure the safety of the minors involved. "Both children were removed from the home by DCS," as stated by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. The couple now faces serious charges and a bond set at $130,000 each, with a court date appointed for August 13. This incident strikes a somber note on the continuing crisis of drug use in environments where the most vulnerable—children—are involuntarily involved.
